January 13, 2010
The City of Spartanburg’s Brownfields
Task Force met today to begin the site selection process. Task
Force members include representatives from the US Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA), SC Department of Health and Environmental
Control (DHEC), SC House of Representatives, City of Spartanburg,
Community Leaders, and GEL Engineering, LLC (GEL).
Mr. Wes Corrothers, City of Spartanburg Neighborhood Services Director, opened the meeting and was followed by a presentation by the City’s Brownfields consultant, GEL. GEL personnel summarized screening criteria for the site selection process and described multiple candidates for assessment that have been identified within the project area.
The presentation also showcased the City’s Brownfields Program website, which will be launched in the days to come. The Task Force will now further define the site selection screening criteria and begin selecting sites for assessment. The US EPA will have to approve selected sites, but the Task Force is hopeful site assessments can begin in the coming weeks.
